Stand Out to Google’s Algorithm with Bolded Text
Bolding text is a useful way to ensure that readers will see something that you want to stand out – but did you know that it can also be helpful for SEO? According to a recent article, Google’s SEO leader John Mueller confirmed that bolding key text within a paragraph could boost SEO as it makes it easier for the algorithm to find and understand the content.
Apparently, the same question was raised to Google’s SEO experts a decade ago. They found the same result to be true – specifically when applying <b> and <strong> metadata to a site. This is fascinating because, as digital marketers, we spend a lot of time focusing on how the algorithms are changing – and rarely take note of best practices and SEO hacks that have enduring value.
While Google’s web crawlers are reasonably effective at interpreting content on their own, when text is bolded, it understands that the bolded text conveys emphasis, just as it would for a reader. That said, if you were to put all of your text in bold, it would convey no hierarchy of content importance to the algorithm. With this in mind, it is wise to reserve bolded text for blog posts or informational sites with enough written content to truly benefit your message to bold a sentence or two.
