Have You Defined Your Brand’s Share of Model Voice?

Google’s August spam update is on the same trajectory as AI Overviews: in general, clicks are no longer the measure of success in search. Traditional metrics such as ranking position and traffic volume fail to measure the factors that matter most today.
When the search engine results page displays AI Overviews, the top organic result now gets 58% fewer clicks. This ranking adds little value when the user remains with them on the Google platform. A brand that is cited on the AI Overview does not get direct traffic, yet it gains substantial visibility and an authority signal.
What does this mean? Success in search now consists of a variety of scattered achievements, starting with your brand’s share of the LLM’s voice. How consistently is your brand cited as the authoritative source across AI systems? Citation frequency, more than click-through rates, is the new proxy for authority. To be cited, content needs to be unique and contribute to a brand’s specific, differentiated online presence. The more generic, the less valuable content will be, which is to say, AI will not cite AI-generated content. Lastly, a strong handle on owned channels such as newsletters, subscriptions, online communities, and in-store marketing efforts will be essential to rounding out a brand’s digital marketing strategy. While AI search has taken the reins in search engines and chat tools, brands still have full control over how they manage their owned channels.
Search, answer, and generative optimization require separate, simultaneous functions: powerful SEO so that users can find your content, AEO to answer questions during a search, and GEO to ensure that AI systems will cite and recommend you. At ASTRALCOM, we have decades of expertise leading omnichannel marketing efforts for brands. Now, with AI tools in the mix, the channels are more layered, and we can help your brand stay ahead, measure your share of model voice, and rebuild your search strategy.
