The Trust Gap: Why AI Usage Doesn’t Mean AI Approval

Why AI Usage Doesn’t Mean AI ApprovalHere’s a puzzle that might change how you generate content for your customers. A recent survey found that 89% of U.S. adults have at least one concern about AI, yet 55% use it at least once a week. Among the people who worry, the weekly users barely drop off at all.

Perplexingly, usage conveys almost nothing about trust. Someone can ask ChatGPT for dinner ideas every night and still doubt what it tells them about your product category. Heavy use does not earn AI tools a vote of confidence; instead, it has become a habit born of skepticism.

Most users’ worries are specific. Privacy and security top the list at 63%. Over 53% are concerned that people are leaning on AI too heavily. Nearly half distrust the companies behind it, and 46% question whether the answers are accurate.

Pew Research recently conducted a similar poll, with results that also show strikingly low confidence in tech and AI. Even so, most Americans aren’t full-blown haters. Around four out of ten feel both excited and worried at the same time. The biggest divide is about how often people use AI. Weekly users are more likely to view its overall impact as positive, whereas people who never touch it see it as a social problem.

Based on these trends, there are some actions marketers can take to get ahead of the trust curve. First, answer their worries out loud. Cite your sources, name your authors, and be clear in how you present your data. Explain plainly what happens to customer information. And be honest about what your products and services can’t do. Test a page that lists its limits against one that promises everything. Measure qualified leads, not just clicks, for each of them. The honest page may perform better with an audience that already expects to be oversold.

Your customers will keep using AI despite their doubts and reservations. The best thing you can do is make sure they trust what they find about you, and ASTRALCOM can help. Discover our content strategy services.
